College of Education Invites Southwest Florida to Open House May 28; Offers $25,000 Yearly Assistantship

FORT MYERS, FL - The Florida Gulf Coast University College of Education invites educators and interested individuals in Southwest Florida to an Open House, 5:30 p.m., Wednesday, May 28 in 213 Student Union to learn about the educational specialist degree program at FGCU.

The educational specialist is a post-master's program with concentrations available in either Education Leadership or Curriculum and Instruction.

In addition, for the first time, the FGCU College of Education offers paid graduate assistantships.

One assistantship pays $25,000 per year plus tuition. The paid position is a full time commitment that allows the recipient to gain experience as an instructor and researcher at the college level.

"It is a first for us and a perfect way for someone who eventually wants to teach at the college level to get actual experience while being paid," said assistant dean of the College of Education Sherree Houston.

Smaller assistantships are also available.

The FGCU College of Education's nationally recognized faculty use innovative methods in a combination of online, face-to-face, evening and weekend classes.

The Curriculum and Instruction concentration meets the need of educators in areas such as staff development, program coordination and curriculum development. Careers include curriculum specialist, director of elementary and secondary programs, and reading specialist.

The Educational Leadership concentration prepares individuals to become agents of change in organizations as leaders among the ranks of principals, superintendents and chief executive officers. Graduates of the program are also prepared to seek doctoral degrees in education.

For more information about the Open House, the public should call (239) 590-7800.
