FGCU Presents "Focus the Campus" to Update Public on Sustainability Initiatives

FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University presents "Focus the Campus," 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 8 in the Student Union to provide updates on sustainability initiatives at FGCU. Students, faculty, staff and the general public are invited to attend the free event.

Presentations and informational displays will bring the FGCU community up-to-date on the initiatives undertaken by many varied groups on campus. Attendees will learn about FGCU's Carbon Footprint Report, the Solar Farm installation, FGCU ride sharing program, Bike2FGCU, Academic 7 progress, Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification, presentations by the academic colleges and more. Short presentations will run throughout the day with time for questions after each presentation.

"Focus the Campus" is sponsored by the Environmental Stewardship Advisory Council (ESAC), which is comprised of 13 members from the FGCU community in addition to FGCU President Wilson G. Bradshaw and staff. The ESAC was formed by former FGCU President William Merwin in 2002 to foster environmentally sustainable policies consistent with the University's mission, guiding principles and student learning goals. Since the formation, the ESAC developed an Environmental Stewardship Management Plan and is now moving beyond planning and into action.

Implementation was advanced during Interim President Richard Pegnetter's tenure when he signed the President's Climate Commitment, making FGCU part of the President's Climate Commitment Leadership Circle. Lewis Johnson, director of Environmental Health and Safety has completed FGCU’s carbon inventory and will be presenting the results to the campus.

"The purpose of 'Focus the Campus' is to communicate many excellent initiatives to the entire campus community, to inform them of ride sharing programs, and to learn about opportunities to become engaged," said Christine Andrews, associate professor in the Lutgert College of Business. "The ESAC is hopeful that an educated campus will make better informed decisions that lead the way to behavior change that will help secure our future."
