FGCU College of Arts and Sciences Presents Talk by Archeologist Margo Schwadron Nov. 19

WHO FGCU College of Arts and Sciences, for the public

WHAT "Shell Work Landscapes and Emergent Complexity in the Ten Thousand Islands," a talk presented by archeologist Margo Schwadron. She has worked with the Southeastern Archaeological Center in Tallahassee for 18 years, and is currently engaged in a National Historic Landmark study of shell work sites in the Ten Thousand Islands. This research recently earned National Geographic attention and funding.

WHEN 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 19

WHERE Sugden Welcome Center

WHY Schwadron's talk will focus on the engineering feats of prehistoric coastal foragers of the Ten Thousand Islands. She will answer questions such as:
How do changes in shell work sizes and features reflect the development of social complexity over time?
What role did demographic changes, subsistence strategies, and corporate labor play in the construction of these features?
Archeological testing, GIS and data visualization are used to interpret spatially and temporarily variable shell work landscapes, working toward an understanding of the regional settlement pattern and its underlying social structure.

COST Free and open to the public
