FGCU Bower School of Music Presents Faculty Recital Jan. 16 Featuring Paul Votapek, Clarinet and Michael Baron, Piano

FORT MYERS, FL - The Bower School of Music at Florida Gulf Coast University presents a faculty recital featuring Paul Votapek on clarinet and Michael Baron on piano, 7:30 p.m., Friday, Jan. 16 in the Student Union ballroom. The concert is free and open to the public.

The program includes works by Brahms, von Weber and many others.

Votapek, instructor of clarinet at FGCU, has been a member of the Naples Philharmonic Orchestra since 1988, and principal clarinetist since 1996. He has performed with the Utah Symphony, the Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra, the Pine Mountain Music Festival and the Marrowstone Music Festival.

He recently released a recording of the Concert and Contest Collection for Clarinet, a noted book of solo literature for student clarinetists. Votapek received his bachelor's and master's degrees from Northwestern University where he studied with Clark Brody and Robert Marcellus. He has completed doctoral classes and recitals at Florida State University, where he studied with Frank Kowalsky.

Professor of music and head of Piano Studies at FGCU, Baron is an award-winning concert pianist. He performs throughout the United States, Europe and Asia.Baron commands a diverse repertoire, ranging from Baroque compositions to world premieres of contemporary pieces.

Baron received his doctorate in Piano Performance from The Ohio State University where he studied with the legendary American pianist Earl Wild. He also worked extensively in Italy with renowned pianist Orazio Frugoni. For 17 years Baron co-directed the Corsi Internazionali di Musica summer music festival at the University of Urbino. He also founded and directs several other music festivals.
