FGCU Art Gallery Opens "Kent Anderson Butler: Recent Works" with Reception Sept. 3

FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University's Art Gallery announces its first exhibition of the season, a solo exhibition of recent works from Los Angeles based artist Kent Anderson Butler. The exhibition opens with the artist 5 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 3, in the Art Gallery located within FGCU's Arts Complex. The exhibition runs through Oct. 9.

Butler works in a variety of mediums including video installation, performance and photography. The exhibition at FGCU's Art Gallery features four videos: "Hallowed Pondering," "Virginal Wound," "Offering," "Divine Breath," and a video installation of the performance piece "Submergence."

About his work, Anderson Butler states, "The religious philosopher Teilhard de Chardin once wrote, 'Instead of regarding ourselves as human beings struggling to have some kind of spiritual experience, perhaps, we would consider the possibility that we are spiritual beings having a human experience. And the human experience, as we know, for better or worse, is lived in the body.' Within my body I experience physical, mental and spiritual phenomena such as pain, pleasure, struggle, redemption and restoration. In my body I will experience life, death, and, I believe, transcendence."

He has participated in solo and group exhibitions throughout the country including Art Center College of Design and The Pasadena Museum of California Art in Pasadena, Calif.; Fringe Exhibitions in Los Angeles, Calif.; Orange County Museum of Art in Newport Beach, Calif.; Cave Gallery in Brooklyn, N.Y.; Track 16 Gallery in Santa Monica, Calif.; and Hunter College in New York. His video work is also in the video art libraries at Pierogi Gallery in Brooklyn, N.Y., and Fringe Exhibitions in Los Angeles.

In addition to showing regularly in exhibitions, Anderson Butler is also a professor of photography and new genre art at Azusa Pacific University in Los Angeles, where he explores the intersections of spirituality and contemporary art.
