Florida Campus Compact Selects Three FGCU Faculty Members for State Service

FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Campus Compact, a coalition of 52 colleges and universities, has selected three Florida Gulf Coast University faculty members to participate in two new statewide initiatives designed to provide education that connects communities and serves society.

Tina Gelpi, assistant professor in Occupational and Community Health, Jessica Rhea, instructor in Communications and Philosophy, and Lisa Zidek, associate professor in Bioengineering and Academic Program Director in the U.A. Whitaker School of Engineering will participate in FL/CC campus-community partnerships created to strengthen academics and civic engagement.

Zidek is selected for the Engaged Scholars Fellowship Program. Five faculty members at Florida institutions will have the opportunity to be part of an active community of scholars who meet regularly for the next year to discuss strategies for research design and dissemination.

Zidek is planning to study the impact of engineering service-learning on the local community and the engagement of students in community activities with an emphasis on developing social responsibility. Each scholar receives modest financial support for the research and is invited to submit an article for publication.

Gelpi and Rhea are chosen for a second year-long, statewide FL/CC program, the Emerging Scholars Fellowship Program. The initiative provides opportunities to develop their interests in service-learning while working with experts in the field to build and develop high quality service-learning and civic engagement programs.
After completing the program, Gelpi and Rhea will apply to the FL/CC for the Certified Scholars Program for further professional development and training in the field of service-learning.

In addition, an FGCU staff and faculty team developed a proposal for a two-day service-learning and civic engagement institute, which FL/CC will fund this fall. The "Livin' La Vida Local - Hands-On Locally for Global Understanding" institute is scheduled for Oct. 30-31.

The institute showcases successful university-faculty-community activities with speakers who will help participants take their service-learning classes and projects to a higher level and assist them in moving forward with community-based research.

FL/CC is part of the National Campus Compact organization of over 1,100 college and university presidents representing public and private two-year and four-year institutions. Visit
