FGCU and Lee Memorial Health System Host End of Life Care Conference Nov. 14; Early Registration Ends Sept. 30

FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University and Lee Memorial Health System will host an end of life care conference for the public including health care providers, hospice workers, church participants or individuals working with an aging population, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 14 in the Student Union Ballroom on campus.

"Body, Mind and Spirit - Managing End of Life Care: An Interdisciplinary Approach," is a one-day health care conference featuring leading health professionals who will provide updates and insights on the physical, psychological and spiritual aspects of end of life care.

Keynote speaker is Dr. Ladislav Volicer, former medical director at the E.N. Rogers Memorial Veterans Hospital, Geriatric Research, Education and Clinical Center, Dementia Study Unit in Bedford, Mass. He is currently a full professor in School of Aging Studies, College of Arts and Sciences at the University of South Florida. Volicer will present the keynote titled, "Enhancing Quality of Life in Advanced Dementia."

Other large group presentations include "Health Promotion for Older People: Multisector Strategies, Challenges and Globalization," presented by FGCU professor in the College of Health Professions, Halcyon St. Hill; and "Understanding and Responding to the Depression and Grief of Dying Persons and their Caregivers," presented by Ginny Chappelear of TideWell Hospice and Palliative Care in Port Charlotte.

A number of small group workshops on a variety of topics provide opportunity for increased interaction amongst disciplines.

FGCU gratefully acknowledges support from The Southwest Florida Coalition Improving End of Life Care, The Alvin A. Dubin Alzheimer's Resource Center, and TideWell Hospice and Palliative Center.

Contact hours will be available for certified health education specialists, chaplains, social workers, marriage and family therapists, mental health counselors, physicians, nursing home administrators, nursing, occupational therapists and physical therapists. A reduced rate is available for students and volunteers not desiring contact hours.

Early bird registration is available by Sept. 30.
