Professor Janusz Zalewski Bestowed NASA Faculty Fellowship Award

FORT MYERS, FL - Janusz Zalewski, professor of Computer Science in the U.A. Whitaker School of Engineering at Florida Gulf Coast University, was recently awarded a NASA 2010 Summer Faculty Fellowship, one of only five researchers in the nation to receive the 2010 fellowship award.

Zalewski will spend eight weeks in the NASA Ames Research Center in California working on a project named "Prognostics for Complex Systems," which involves early assessment of abnormal conditions and the estimation of remaining life of a space mission component or subsystem. After completion, he will present the results of his work during a week-long workshop at the Kennedy Space Center. Zalewski, who arrived at FGCU in 2002 from the University of Central Florida, has previously participated in similar projects with the national nuclear research laboratories and with the Air Force Research Lab in Eglin Air Force Base in Florida.

The computer science program at FGCU has recently made a strong connection with NASA. Senior Jaime Zabala, who graduates this spring, spent last summer as an intern at the NASA Goddard Space Center in Washington, D.C.; and has accepted a job offer from the NASA subcontractor, Vantage Systems Inc., where he will assume a position as Flight Software Testing Engineer.

Zalewski and his students are currently in the process of completing a project funded last year by NASA through the Florida Space Grant Consortium on "Internet-based Embedded Systems Lab," developing robotic and telemetry stations. The results of both NASA projects will be applied in the Senior Software Engineering Project course in the next academic year.

For more information, media representatives should contact Zalewski at (239) 590-7317.
