Naples Garden Club Establishes Endowed Fellowship at FGCU's Kapnick Center

FORT MYERS, FL - Naples Garden Club recently contributed to the success of Florida Gulf Coast University and The Harvey Kapnick Education and Research Center by establishing the Naples Garden Club Fellowship Endowed Fund in the amount of $100,000.

The FGCU Foundation will apply for 50 percent in matching funds from the State of Florida Trust Fund for Major Gifts. When fully funded, the value of the gift will be $150,000.

Proceeds from the fund each year will be given as Naples Garden Club Fellowships to FGCU students who are undergraduates in their junior or senior year or in an FGCU graduate program; are majoring in horticulture, in a botany-related field, or in environmental studies; and are conducting research at The Harvey Kapnick Education and Research Center at the Naples Botanical Gardens.

The Naples Garden Club Fellowships will be awarded on an annual basis starting with the fall 2010 semester, and students may receive the funds in successive years.

Liz Chehayl, president of the Naples Garden Club, noted that "Garden Club members will be able to witness the student's research and interact with them because they will be working in our own backyard at the Naples Botanical Garden. This endowment is the culmination of many decades of scholarships we have awarded locally in botany, horticulture and environment. We are delighted to partner with FGCU."

"lorida Gulf Coast University is truly honored to receive this generous gift from the prestigious Naples Garden Club organization. We believe that research conducted by students and faculty at FGCU' Harvey Kapnick Education and Research Center can truly make a difference in our Southwest Florida community, the State of Florida and beyond. We are deeply appreciative of this donation," said FGCU President Wilson G. Bradshaw.

Naples Garden Club has over 180 members who are dedicated to the love of gardening, the artistic design of plant material, the beautification of the community, and the preservation of the natural world. It is a member of National Garden Clubs, Inc. and the Florida Federation of Garden Clubs.

The Harvey Kapnick Education and Research Center officially opened its doors in February 2010; and it is set to be the nexus of all Garden programming, serving as the base of school and Lifelong Learning courses. Area garden clubs and plant societies will be able to utilize spaced in the Center for meetings and specimen showcases. The Kapnick Center is owned by FGCU and as such represents the University's first permanent presence in Collier County.
