FGCU Students Hold a First Amendment Free Food Festival

FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University invites the media to attend the student-led First Amendment Free Food Festival on Thursday, Sept. 23, from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the Student Union cafeteria. The festival is presented by FGCU's Student Government Civic Engagement office, the Service-Learning Program, BEEP, and Eagle News (FGCU's student newspaper).

The first 200 FGCU students who choose to waive their First Amendment rights for the evening will receive a free meal-and the mock experience of living without the five rights guaranteed by the First Amendment. Inside the cafeteria, a squad of goons -- armed with riot shields and enforcing the rules - will "arrest" students who try to exercise their surrendered rights by speaking their minds, or peaceably assembling, or complaining when they are (intentionally) served the wrong food. There will be a dictator's lounge for students who are particularly compliant. Most of the goons and arrestees will be student actors performing skits they have developed.

This event has been held at colleges and universities across the United States, sponsored by College Media Advisers and the Society of Professional Journalists. For additional information about the national event, visit

For additional information about the event, contact one of the festival's faculty advisers: journalism assistant professor Lyn Millner at (239) 590-7257 or the interim director of Service-Learning, Jessica Rhea at (239) 590-7016.
