FGCU's Vice President Joseph Shepard to Assume Presidency At Western New Mexico University

FORT MYERS, FL - Florida Gulf Coast University's vice president for Administrative Services and Finance, Dr. Joseph Shepard, has accepted an offer to become the 15th president of Western New Mexico University. Dr. Shepard will leave his position at FGCU at the end of June and assume his presidency on July 5.

"I am pleased-and not at all surprised-that Dr. Shepard has taken the next step in his career," says FGCU President Wilson G. Bradshaw. "Joe has developed broad expertise at FGCU and his dedicated leadership here has contributed significantly to FGCU's growth and excellence. I wish him the very best as he begins his presidency at Western New Mexico University."

Dr. Shepard joined the FGCU in 1995 to assist in the creation of the division of Student Affairs at the newly established university. He was named dean of Student Affairs in 2002. A year later, he was named vice president for Administrative Services and Finance.

Dr. Shepard has been active in the classroom, teaching courses in finance, organizational behavior, public budgeting, and statistics, in the Lutgert College of Business, the College of Education, and the College of Professional Studies. He has been instrumental as a senior administrator in helping shape the evolution of Florida Gulf Coast University. He played a key role in
•     Creating the Division of Student Affairs.
•     Establishing university housing for residential students that now houses more than 3,000 students.
•     Expanding facilities on the campus, including the new music building, the Platinum LEED certified Academic Building 7, and South Village residence halls.
•     Building FGCU’s 2 megawatt, 15-acre solar field.
•     Directing the efforts that have led to solid financial strength and an enrollment of over 12,000 students.

Within the Southwest Florida community, Dr. Shepard is active on a number of boards, including the American Heart Association, Center for Environmental and Sustainability Education, Lee Mental Health Systems, Edison and Ford Winter Estates, Inc., and the Southwest Florida Boy Scout Council.

Founded in 1893, Western New Mexico University is located in the mountain community of Silver City, New Mexico. The university has a total enrollment of 3,337 students and has campuses in the cities of Silver City, Deming, Gallup, Truth or Consequences, and Lordsburg. WNMU offers ten master degrees, 41 bachelor degrees, and 18 associate degrees in more than 70 areas of study. Further, a growing number of courses and degrees are offered through the institution's "Extended University" for online students.

Steve Magiera, who is currently FGCU's vice president for University Advancement and executive director of the FGCU Foundation, will succeed Dr. Shepard as vice president for Administrative Services and Finance. The university will conduct a national search for Vice President Magiera's position.
