FGCU Hosts Global UGRAD Fellows

FORT MYERS, FL - This fall, Florida Gulf Coast University welcomed Dariia Gaioshko from Ukraine and Galina Khegay from Uzbekistan as part of the U.S. Department of State's Global Undergraduate Exchange Program in Eurasia and Central Asia (Global UGRAD).

The Global UGRAD program is highly competitive, averaging over 3,000 applications per year with a 5 percent rate of acceptance, and is administered by the International Research & Exchanges Board (IREX).

Global UGRAD aims to advance youth leadership and promote mutual understanding by providing one year of non-degree U.S. study to undergraduates from 12 countries of the former Soviet Union. In addition to their academic studies, Global UGRAD fellows perform community service, explore American traditions through the unique Cultural Passport to America program, and hold one-semester internships.

To complement the academic program and ensure that fellows receive a well-rounded introduction to American values, institutions and people, fellows will participate in cultural activities throughout the community.

"The purpose of this requirement is to ensure students' exploration of various aspects of American culture, such as arts and music, holiday celebrations, sports and leisure, daily life and community life," said Timothy Gjini, associate director for FGCU International Studies. "This is designed to help the students gain in-depth exposure to key American values. It will help fellows integrate into the community and meet American friends-opportunities that international undergraduate students desire, but cannot always find on their own."

The students are available to speak to community groups.

For more information contact Timothy Gjini, associate director for FGCU International Services at (239) 590-7925.
