FGCU Piano Performance Major to Open 2013 ArtsNaples Festival With Recital on Friday, May 10

FORT MYERS, Fla. - A musical virtuoso at Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU) who made her Carnegie Hall debut in March will perform a recital on Friday, May 10 to kick off the 2013 ArtsNaples World Festival.

Priscila Navarro, a 19-year-old piano performance major from Peru, will perform at 2 p.m. Friday at The von Liebig Art Center, 585 Park St., Naples. Tickets are $30. Her recital is the first event in the festival, a cultural celebration that showcases orchestral and chamber music, jazz, dance, cinema and international cuisine. Latin America is the theme this year.

Navarro, who began studying piano at age 9, was discovered at the National Conservatory of Peru by Michael Baron, FGCU music professor and head of keyboard studies, who recruited her for the university's Bower School of Music. She attends FGCU with support from the Steinway Piano Society as well as the Myra N. and Van Zandt Williams Jr. Scholarship Fund and the Eva Sugden Gomez Scholarship.

Winning the 20th International Chopin Competition of Texas in 2012 -one of several national and international contests Navarro has competed in while studying at FGCU - was her ticket to perform on one of the most famous stages in the world.

"In the three years that Priscila has been a student at FGCU she has gone from triumph to triumph," Baron said. "Being awarded a full solo recital in Carnegie Hall is a huge step in her career path."

ArtsNaples World Festival continues through May 14, with concerts and exhibitions at locations throughout Naples. For more information about events and tickets, call 239-390-2788 or go to
