FGCU Welcome Center Showcases Nature Photography

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- "Face-to-Face Encounters," a selection of nature photography by Naples attorney Kenneth R. Johnson, is on display through Feb. 14 at the Margaret S. Sugden Welcome Center at Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU).

The 13 works featured in the center's lobby chronicle close encounters with a shark, rhinoceros, elephant, exotic birds and various sea creatures. Johnson captured the images while scuba diving in the Pacific Ocean and Caribbean Sea and while on safari in Africa.

"Photography has been a hobby of mine since I was a reconnaissance pilot in the Navy in the 1970s," Johnson said. "That's where my interest started."

He and his wife, FGCU Foundation board member Kimberly L. Johnson, travel extensively and enjoy diving. Last year, they established an endowed scholarship fund for FGCU students pursuing careers in marine biology.

Although he has long practiced photography as a hobby, Johnson has never had a public exhibition before. The shark picture featured in the Sugden display was taken around the Turks and Caicos Islands, when he and other divers were about 10 feet away from the toothy fish. No shark cages were used.

"You have to get sort of close," Johnson explained. "Light from a flash doesn't really penetrate through the water column."

Viewers also come face to face with a spotted moray eel, a hippopotamus and a male frigatebird with its red throat sac inflated for courtship.

"Face-to-Face Encounters" can be seen during Welcome Center hours, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Friday and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. Call (239) 590-7890 for more information.
