FGCU Invites Public to Panel Discussion Feb. 16 on Legacy of Matthew Shepard

WHO Bower School of Music and the Arts

WHAT A panel discussion called "Celebrate Love," featuring the director and cast members of FGCU's production of "The Laramie Project," Dawn Larison from the Gender Equality Organization (an FGCU student organization), Megan Deremiah of the Gay Straight Alliance (an FGCU student organization), Todd Caraway (a trainer for FGCU's Safe Zone program that promotes support for the LGBTIQ community on campus) and a representative from Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG).

WHEN 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 16 (after the 2 p.m. performance of "The Laramie Project")

WHERE TheatreLab in the Arts Complex, FGCU main campus, Fort Myers

WHY The panel will focus on the play and reflect on Matthew Shepard's legacy as well as the work that is still to being done to fight discrimination and hate crimes. A young gay man, Shepard was beaten and left to die tied to a fence in the outskirts of Laramie, Wyo., in 1998. "The Laramie Project" is based on interviews conducted with townspeople in the wake of Shepard's killing.
