FGCU Alumni Association Honors Outstanding Graduates During Inaugural Awards Reception

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- The FGCU Alumni Association honored five of its own last week during an inaugural awards reception.

While the association has presented these awards in previous years, this is the first time it has done so at a special ceremony during Alumni Weekend.

Each year, the FGCU Alumni Association Board of Directors welcomes one distinguished graduate into the Alumni of Distinction Society. This is the highest honor the association bestows on a deserving graduate.

This year's honoree is state Rep. Matt Caldwell, R-Lehigh Acres. As a member of the Florida House of Representatives, he advocates for his alma mater and all of Southwest Florida. The 2004 graduate who majored in History was elected in 2010, and was the first FGCU alumnus to be elected to the state legislature.

He has sponsored - and the Governor has signed into law - several pieces of legislation including the Wildman Act, which provided greater protection from career criminals; an act relating to optometry, which will lower the cost of and increase access to eye care; an expansion of the Everglades Forever Act, which will complete Everglades restoration in the area south of Lake Okeechobee; and an act relating to Local Pension reporting, which will increase transparency and allow pensioners to know how their money is invested.

Caldwell also works as a real estate appraiser with Maxwell & Hendry Valuation Services, Inc. in Fort Myers, has attained the highest state certification and is qualified as an expert witness.

The Alumni Association also welcomed four graduates into the Soaring Eagles Society, which honors alumni who have earned a degree from FGCU within the last decade, have dedicated time and resources to their communities and to FGCU, and are considered rising stars in their professions.

This year's Soaring Eagles recipients are: Sarah Adam, Todd Cofer, Ashley Coone and Kelsey DeLoach.

The FGCU Alumni Association strives to build an enduring relationship between alumni and the University community through meaningful programs and by encouraging alumni to contribute their time, talents and financial support to FGCU.
