FGCU Presents Rising Star and Her Mentor in Two-Piano Concert

Performance a Benefit for Scholarships, Piano Majors

FORT MYERS, Fla. - A master concert pianist and his award-winning student will combine their talents in a two-piano benefit concert on Thursday, March 20 at Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU).

Michael Baron, professor and head of keyboard studies in FGCU's Bower School of Music and the Arts, and Priscila Navarro, a piano major who has played Carnegie Hall and won international competitions, will perform at 7 p.m. in the U. Tobe Recital Hall. They will play works by Mozart, Rachmaninoff, Debussy, Saint-Saens and Lutoslawski on twin 9-foot Steinway concert grand pianos.

Tickets are $50, and proceeds will support scholarships as well as competition travel for FGCU piano majors. The concert is sponsored in part by Steinway Piano Society and Greg and Sara Billings.

An award-winning concert pianist, Baron performs more than 40 concerts each year, including annual tours of Europe and engagements in the United States, Asia and South America. In addition to performing as a recitalist, a soloist with orchestras and a chamber musician, he leads master classes and recruits promising musicians from around the world for the Bower School. Baron discovered Navarro at the National Conservatory of Peru when she was 15.

While studying with Baron, Navarro has won four major international competitions including those devoted to Chopin, Beethoven and Liszt. She has studied and performed in Europe and presented a solo recital at Carnegie Hall in 2013. Navarro attends FGCU with support from the Steinway Piano Society as well as the Myra N. and Van Zandt Williams Jr. Scholarship Fund and the Eva Sugden Gomez Scholarship.

"Priscila has matured into one of the finest pianists of her generation," Baron says. "At 19 her future is limitless."

Established in 2006, the Bower School attracts and cultivates gifted musicians from around the world with degree programs in music education and performance and state-of-the-art studio and concert facilities. The school's music faculty and students are a key component of the cultural life of FGCU, performing concerts that draw music lovers from all over Southwest Florida to campus.
